HISTORY OF PEUGEOT

With its major inventions and its numerous successes, PEUGEOT has written many of the most beautiful pages in the history of the automobile. With the new challenges of the 21st century, the PEUGEOT adventure continues.

1810

BEGINNING OF THE PEUGEOT INDUSTRIAL ADVENTURE

The family business was founded in 1810 by Jean-Frédéric and Jean-Pierre II PEUGEOT, during the transformation into a steelworks of the family hydraulic mill located at a place called "Sous-Cratet" in the commune of Hérimoncourt (Doubs). Different branches of the family will launch into very diversified production, but all based on steel (tools, springs, umbrella ribs, corset frames, coffee grinders, timepieces, bicycles, etc.).

1889

PRESENTATION OF THE STEAM TRICYCLE

At the Paris Universal Exhibition, Armand Peugeot presented the first automobile vehicle bearing the name PEUGEOT: a steam tricycle (not marketed), created with engineer Léon Serpollet.

1948

LAUNCH 203: 1ST MONOCOQUE CAR

The 203 was the first car produced after the war. It is also the first monocoque model with an engine with a hemispherical cylinder head and V-shaped valves and the first PEUGEOT produced in more than half a million units.

LAUNCH 404

The 404 was designed by Pininfarina. Its angular lines and the increase in glass surfaces bring modernism and elegance which contrast with the models of the 1950s...

In 1961, the 404 was equipped with the first direct injection engine.

 

 

 

 

1968

LAUNCH 404: RADICALLY NEW STYLE AND EQUIPMENT

Voted car of the year in 1969 in Europe, the 504 has the longest career of any PEUGEOT model (3,700,000 examples put into circulation until 2006). Designed for a bourgeois clientele, thanks to its endurance, it has also become queen of African and South American tracks.

1972

LAUNCH 104: SHORTEST SEDAN IN THE WORLD

The slogan, All PEUGEOT in 3.58 m, recalls that it was the smallest four-door sedan in the world.

1979

LAUNCH 604: FIRST 6-CYCLINDER PEUGEOT SEDAN SINCE 601

With its style and stature, it is adopted by the highest authorities of the State. The first turbo diesel engine marketed in Europe was fitted to the 604.

1983

LAUNCH 205: THE “SACRED NUMBER”

A saving success for PEUGEOT. She became a two-time world rally champion and won two Paris-Dakar races. It will be the best-selling car in France and the most exported French car.

1987

LAUNCH 405

For the second time in its history, PEUGEOT won the European Car of the Year trophy thanks to the 405, its new family car, in 1988.

1997

LAUNCH OF THE 406 COUPE MADE BY PININFARINA

Thanks to its timeless design, it has become a collector's item. It is the first coupe offered with a Diesel engine (2001).

 

 

1998

LAUNCH OF THE 206, 7,326,029 EXEMPLIES PRODUCED

 

The 206 was 3 times world rally champion. Its CC version (2000) revived the fashion for “transformable coupes”, initiated by PEUGEOT in 1934.

 

 

 

2016

LAUNCH OF THE 3008

Praised for its style, interior design and services, the new PEUGEOT 3008 was voted Car of the Year 2017 by a jury of 58 European journalists.



It is the first SUV to win an award since the creation of the trophy in 1964 and the fifth PEUGEOT voted Car of the Year after the 308 in 2014, the 307 in 2002, the 405 in 1988 and the 504 in 1969.
 

2019

The PEUGEOT PARTNER was elected International Van Of The Year 2019, the fifth PEUGEOT vehicle crowned Van Of The Year since the creation of the trophy in 1992.



Two major and unique innovations have attracted attention: the overload indicator for safe loading and Surround Rear Vision which allows camera vision of blind spots.



The PEUGEOT PARTNER stands out for the exclusive adoption and world first in this segment of the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit®, offering a new driving experience for greater productivity.



The “International Van Of The Year” award has existed since 1992. The jury is made up of a European panel of 25 journalists and editors from independent magazines, specializing in light commercial vehicles (LCV).

 

 

2020

The PEUGEOT 208 was voted car of the year 2020 by 60 automotive expert journalists from 23 European countries. The jury praised its range of engines, which offers customers the freedom to choose between electric, petrol or diesel. The jurors also praised the audacity of the design and technology of the PEUGEOT 208, the 6th PEUGEOT named Car of the Year.



With 6 titles, PEUGEOT enters the top 3 of the most successful brands in the list of cars of the year. This prestigious trophy is added to the 12 international awards already received by the PEUGEOT 208.

 

 

2021

The new face of PEUGEOT

The new 308, which bears the Brand's new coat of arms, seduces with its sharp and sensual design, its advanced technology and its efficiency.


Its range of engines, including two rechargeable hybrids (180 or 225 hp), offers customers the power to choose between thermal or electrified propulsion modes.
